If you’re planning to buy a Burmese kitten in Malaysia or Singapore, you might have seen the name “European Burmese.” But did you know there are actually two types of Burmese cats — and they’re quite different?
Let’s take a closer look at what makes the European Burmese unique, how it compares to the American Burmese, and why it’s a rare and wonderful choice for cat lovers in this region.
Only European Burmese Are Found in Malaysia
First, it’s important to know that American Burmese cats are not available in Malaysia. If you see a breeder here, they’re almost certainly offering European Burmese. In fact, only a handful of breeders in the region raise them — including us at Marnad Cattery — making these cats truly exclusive.

European vs American Burmese: How They Compare
Although they come from the same early bloodlines, European and American Burmese cats have developed into two clearly different types — in both looks and personality.
Head and Eyes:
European Burmese have a slightly wedge-shaped head and almond-shaped eyes in golden or yellow tones. They look elegant and alert.
American Burmese, on the other hand, have a very round head with a short muzzle and large, round eyes that give them a more baby-faced appearance.
Body and Build:
European Burmese are medium-sized but lean and muscular, giving them a graceful, balanced look.
American Burmese tend to be more compact, stocky, and heavy-boned — some people call them “brick cats” because of how solid they feel.
Coat and Grooming:
Both types have short coats, but the European Burmese has a finer, satin-like texture that lies close to the body and sheds very little.
The American Burmese has a denser, plush coat that feels thicker and may shed more in warm climates.
Personality:
European Burmese are highly social, curious, and people-focused. They like to follow their humans, engage in gentle conversation with soft meows, and be involved in daily life.
American Burmese are more reserved. While still affectionate, they’re often quieter and may not demand as much attention.
Vocalization:
European Burmese enjoy light, friendly chats with you throughout the day.
American Burmese are typically quiet and rarely vocalize.
Availability in Malaysia and Singapore:
Only European Burmese are currently available in this part of the world.
There are no known American Burmese breeders in Malaysia or Singapore.
