Practical Tips for First-Time Owners | Burmese Cats in Malaysia

Bringing a European Burmese kitten into your home is an exciting moment — and taking proper care of your new furry family member is the best way to build a strong, happy bond.

At Marnad Cattery, we raise purebred European Burmese kittens in Malaysia, and we always provide guidance to new owners about how to care for them. These beautiful, short-haired cats are low-maintenance, but there are still a few key things you should know.

Here’s a complete guide to caring for your Burmese kitten at home.

Grooming the Coat

European Burmese cats have a short, satin-smooth coat that requires very little grooming. Their fur stays naturally clean and glossy — no regular baths are needed.

Still, we recommend:
• Brushing your kitten gently once or twice a week with a soft brush
• Using this time to bond — many Burmese love gentle grooming and will purr happily

Bathing is not necessary unless your cat gets very dirty. If you do bathe them, use a tear-free, cat-safe shampoo, and make sure the water temperature is warm (around 37–39°C).

Nail Care

Like all cats, your Burmese kitten’s claws will need trimming every 2–3 weeks. It’s a simple process:
1. Hold the paw gently and press the toe pad to reveal the claw
2. Trim only the clear tip of the nail — avoid the pink area (the quick)
3. Use a proper cat nail clipper and reward your kitten after

Start slowly and keep sessions short at first. Burmese kittens usually get used to nail trimming easily when introduced gently.

Eye Care

European Burmese cats have beautiful, expressive eyes. While they don’t usually have problems, you may occasionally notice light discharge in the corners, especially after sleep.

Use a soft cotton pad with warm water or a gentle eye cleaner from a pet store to wipe it away. Do not use harsh products.

Ear Cleaning

Check your kitten’s ears weekly. Clean only if you notice visible wax or dirt buildup. Use a vet-approved ear cleaning solution and a soft cotton pad — never insert anything deep into the ear canal.

Play and Enrichment

Burmese kittens are intelligent and playful. They need daily mental and physical stimulation. Provide:
• Interactive toys (balls, teasers, tunnels)
• Climbing and scratching structures (cat trees, posts)
• Safe spaces to nap, jump, and hide

Playtime isn’t optional — it’s essential for healthy development and a strong emotional connection with you.

Hydration and Nutrition

Provide fresh water daily. You may also consider a cat water fountain to encourage more drinking. Use separate bowls for wet and dry food, and always feed high-quality, age-appropriate kitten food (ask your breeder for their current diet).

Final Words

European Burmese cats are affectionate, curious, and easy to care for. With just a little time each day for grooming, play, and bonding, your kitten will grow into a confident, loving adult cat.
